দেবদাসী প্রথা – মন্দিরের পবিত্র বেশ্যাবৃত্তি

দেবদাসী কী?

দেবদাসীর আক্ষরিক অর্থ দেবতার দাসী। বিস্তৃত অর্থে মন্দিরের যৌনদাসী, ধর্মীয় পতিতা^[1]অনির্বাণ বন্দোপাধ্যায়, গণিকা দর্শন, ৭. দেবদাসীর অন্য নাম গণিকা। মন্দিরের নাচ-গান করা, মন্দির রক্ষণাবেক্ষণ, পুরোহিতদের যৌন চাহিদা মেটানো এসবকিছুই ছিলো দেবদাসীদের কাজ। ভারতীয় প্রথা অনুসারে সুন্দরী যুবতী মেয়ে কিংবা শিশু মেয়েদের দেবতার সাথে ‘বিয়ে দেওয়া’ কিংবা ‘উৎসর্গ’ করে দেওয়া হতো।

প্রাচীন বিশ্বে অনেক জায়গাতেই এই প্রথা বিভিন্নভাবে চালু ছিলো। ব্যবলীয়নীয়রা প্রেমের দেবী আফ্রোদিতির মন্দিরে মেয়েদের ধরে নিয়ে যেতো, সেখানে অপরিচিত পুরুষের সাথে তাদের শুতে হতো। মেসোপটোমিয়ানরা, গ্রিকরাও কম যেতো না। তবে আমাদের আজকের আলোচনা মূলত ভারত ও হিন্দুধর্মকেন্দ্রীক।

এটা সবাই জানে আর্যরা এদেশে এসে এই প্রথা শুরু করেছিলো একসময়, এবং ব্রাহ্মণরা এই প্রথাকে একদম শিল্পের পর্যায়ে নিয়ে গিয়েছিলো।

একটু ইতিহাস

মধ্যযুগে হিন্দু মন্দিরগুলোতে দেবদাসী প্রথা বেশি প্রচলিত হওয়ার কারণ হিন্দুরা বিশ্বাস করতো এতে তাদের জন্য মন্দিরের মতো স্বর্গ তৈরি হবে এবং দেবদাসীরা স্বর্গের অপ্সরা তুল্য।

“Every Hindu temple aims at being an earthly reproduction of the paradise of the god in whose honour it was built…. The Gandharvas are represented by the Temple-band, the Apsaras by the courtesans who sing and dance in the service. These are dedicated to the service of the god; they also give their favours to his worshippers. They are usually called Devadasis”^[2]Modern Religious Movements in India, page 408-9

ভারতে ভ্রমণকারী ট্রাভের্নিয়ার লিখেছেন,

When these young girls have reached the age of eleven or twelve years their mistresses take them to this pagoda, as thay believe that it will be good fortune to be offered and abandoned to this idol.^[3]Travels in India by Jean Baptise Travernier, pg 58

বার্নিয়ারের সমসাময়িক বর্ণনানুসারে মুঘল আমলে জগন্নাথ পুরী মন্দিরে ছোট ছোট বাচ্চা মেয়েদের ধর্ষণ করতো ব্রাহ্মণরা,^[4]Travels in Mughal Empire, pg 305

আব্বে দুবইস তার বইয়ে দেবদাসী সম্পর্কে লিখেছেন যে, তারা ব্রাহ্মণদের “Enjoyment” ছিলো,

“The courtesans or dancing-girls attached to each temples take their place in the second rank; they are called deva dasis (slaves of the gods) but the public call them by the more vulgar name of prostitutes. And in fact they are bound by their profession to grant their favours, if such they be, to anybody demanding them in return for ready money. It appears that at first they were reserved exclusively for the enjoyment of the Brahmins. And these lewd women, who make a public traffic of their charms, are consecrated in a special manner to the worship of the divinities of India. Every temple of any importance has in its service a band of eight, twelve, or more. Their official duties consist in dancing and singing within the temple twice a day, morning and evening, and also at all public ceremonies”^[5]Hindu Manners and Customs, pg 585, by Abbe Dubois

১৩ শতাব্দীর ভ্রমণকারী ম্যাক্রো পোলোর কাহিনীতে উঠে এসেছে,

…Fathers and mothers dedicate their daughters in Temples. Having been so dedicated, they are expected to attend whenever the priests of the convent require them to contribute to the gratification of the idol…. they expect the girls to appear in a state of nudity, with only a cloth round their waists, to chant hymns”^[6]The Travels of Marco Polo, a Venetian, in the Thirteenth Century; Being a Description, by that Early Traveller, of Remarkable Places and Things, in the Eastern Parts of the World, page 647 – Google Books

শুধু ব্রাহ্মণ নয়, রাজাদেরও লাভ ছিলো এখানে। আকর্ষণীয় ‘Sexual Object/যৌনবস্তু’ হিসেবে দেবদাসীদের মন্দিরে রাখতে দিতো, তাতে মন্দিরে বেশি বেশি মানুষ যেতো, আর রাজাদের আর্থিক লাভ হতো।

উঠে এসেছে আল-বিরুনীর বর্ণনায়,

“The kings make them (prostitutes in idol temples who sing, dance and play) an attraction for their cities, a bait of pleasure for their subjects, for no other but financial reasons. By the revenues which they derive from the business both as fines and taxes, they want to recover the expenses which their treasury has to spend on the army.”^[7]Quoted in Muhammad Husayn Nainer: Arab Geographers’ Knowledge of Souhern India, Madras University, 1942, part II, pg 157

অপ্সরাতুল্য দেবদাসী?

অনেক হিন্দুই দেবদাসীদের অপ্সরাতুল্য ভাবতো। কিন্তু অপ্সরা রা নিজে কী?

অপ্সরাও দেবদাসীদের মতোই বেশ্যা। এর উল্লেখ আছে হিন্দুদের পুরাণ দেবী ভাগবত-তে,^[17]দেবী ভাগবত ৯/১/১৪২-১৪৩, অনুবাদঃ পঞ্চানন তর্করত্ন, নবভারত পাবলিশার্স

সাংবিধানিক আইন দ্বারা নিষিদ্ধকরণ

ভারতে ইংরেজ আমলে 1934 Devadasi Security Act এর মাধ্যমে এই প্রথা নিষিদ্ধ করা হয়। আশির দশকে আবার আইন করে নিষিদ্ধ করা হয় বিভিন্ন জায়গায়, যেমনঃ Karnataka Devadasi (Prohibition of Dedication) Act of 1982, The Andhra Pradesh Devadasis (Prohibition of Dedication) Act of 1988. ১৯৯২ সালে ভারতে ‘নগ্ন-পূজা’ বন্ধ করা হয়।
